Kathryn was so angry she could claw through metal. “How could you be so stupid?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Carter said, rubbing his neck.

“You know exactly what I’m talking about,” Kathryn countered, speaking in low tones so the other guests wouldn’t hear. “Dancing like that with Peyton Kelly.”

“You’re blowing this way out of proportion. Art Labrum wanted to dance with her, but he can’t, so I danced with her on his behalf. It was nothing.”

Kathryn didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Carter had such promise, and he was brilliant in so many ways … but he was a blockhead in the one area that mattered the most. Everything they’d worked so hard to achieve was within their grasp, and he was blowing it all on a silly girl. “Don’t tell me it was nothing. I saw how you looked at her. Everyone here saw it … including Millicent,” she added in disgust.

“Speaking of which, you said Millicent was looking for me. Where is she?”

Kathryn’s lips vanished into a thin line. “She left.”

“Then why’d you tell me she was looking for me?”

Was Carter really so obtuse that she had to spell it out for him? “Millicent saw you with Peyton, so she left. And if you have any sense in your thick head, you’ll go after her and beg for her forgiveness.”

Carter scowled. “Don’t count on it, Mother.”

She drew herself up to her full height, the lines on her face deepening. “Just what do you mean by that?”

He gave her a hard look. “You and I both know it isn’t going to work with Millicent. It’s better to come to terms with it now rather than later.”

Kathryn’s face fell as she gasped, her hand going over her chest. “How can you say that? The two of you are perfect together.”

“No, actually, we’re not. We have nothing in common. And quite frankly, she bores me stiff.”

Kathryn’s face drained as she stumbled back.

Carter reached for her arm to steady her. “Are you okay?”

She nodded. “Help me to a chair.”

Fitz stepped from the shadows. “Here, allow me,” he said, taking her arm. Kathryn leaned on him for support, her lower lip quivering. Fitz looked at Carter. “I’ll take it from here.”

“I can help,” Carter said, worry clouding his features.

Kathryn waved a shaky hand. “I’m okay,” she said weakly, turning to Fitz. “Maybe you could take me inside and get me a glass of water?” She eyed Carter, the bite returning to her voice. “If you really want to help, you can make amends with Millicent. Fitz, let’s go,” she snapped.

Fitz nodded and steered her toward the door. When they stepped inside, Kathryn let go of Fitz’s arm and stood up straight.

Fitz chuckled. “Just as I thought. You know, there are easier ways to fix this situation without you being reduced to pandering to your son. Just say the word, and I’ll take care of the whole thing.”

Fire licked through her eyes. “First of all, I don’t appreciate being accused of pandering. And secondly, I’ve got the situation under control.
